Theme sentence: The Jew’s promised to be the people God had commanded them to be.
Aim sentence: We are to be the people God has called us to be, living rightly and worshipping rightly, for the sake of His glory in the world.
Signed and sealed (9:38 – 10:29)
All the people get behind this binding agreement, promising to live according to God’s law.
They are making a covenant to keep the covenant.
The Promise
No inter-marriage
In order to keep themselves spiritually pure they pledge to separate themselves from the surrounding people.
Keep the Sabbath
In obedience to God’s Law, and to identify themselves as different from the nations around them, they promise to take a stand on Sabbath observance.
Support the temple ministry
In order to worship God rightly they promise to support the temple ministry because the temple was the God ordained place of worship.
Now what?
Just like in Nehemiah’s day we are called to be different, to stand out from those around us, to be the people God has called us to be, rightly worshipping Him for the sake of His glory in the world.
