Theme sentence: The Lord God is the only God.

Aim sentence: Acknowledge the foolishness of idolatry, and use the power of praying to the only God who really hears.

Preparation for the Showdown (1 – 16)

Elijah returns to Israel and tells Obadiah to tell King Ahab that he has returned. Elijah is preparing for a showdown.

Proposal for the Showdown (17 – 19)

Elijah tells Ahab to bring the prophets of Baal to meet him on Mount Carmel for a showdown.

Purpose of the Showdown (20 – 25)

The purpose is clear; “Whose God is the real God?” The God who answers with fire wins!

Champion of the Showdown (26 – 46)

The contrast in the answers the prophets get couldn’t be starker. Baal gives no answer to the hours of shouting, dancing, and cutting by the prophets of Baal.

Elijah prays a 30-second prayer, and the Lord God answers with fire.

Now what?

The Lord God is the only God. This story highlights the foolishness of idolatry, and also the power of praying to the only God who really hears.

We serve the all-powerful God. The fire from heaven God. The cross enduring, sin-slaying, death defeating God. Our God can do BIG things through a group of people who pray BIG prayers and attempt BIG things for Him.
