Theme sentence: Pastor, care for the church; church honour your pastor.

Aim sentence: Pastors should be honoured, protected, rebuked, and appointed by the church so that the Gospel will be guarded by the church.

God’s name and fame in the world are vitally linked to the reputation of God’s church in the world.

Church leaders are key instruments that God uses to protect the reputation of the church.

Paul now has some specific commands regarding pastors that will help God’s church to guard the Gospel well.

Honour your pastors (17 – 18)

Good pastors should be honoured both in terms of respect and in terms of pay.

Protect from false accusations (19)

Accusations against a pastor should not be taken lightly. Godly teachers need to be protected against false accusations and unfair criticism.

Rebuke when necessary (20 – 21)

When there is clear guilt it must dealt with publically for the good of the Gospel.

Recruit with caution (22 – 25)

Great care must be taken in ordaining men for ministry.

Now what?

Pastors should have a genuine concern for the body of Christ, and the body ought to have a loving honour for its pastors so that together we can keep at the task of seeing sinners saved.
