Theme sentence: Materialism is deceptive, dangerous and ultimately damning.

Aim sentence: If we are going to keep fighting the good fight of faith, then one of the key things we are going to have to fight against is materialism.

The danger of different doctrine (2b – 5)

The false teachers in Ephesus were teaching a different doctrine and the results in the church were disastrous.

The danger of materialism (9 – 10)

Materialism is deceptive, dangerous and ultimately damning. Paul is warning against this pervasive danger.

The gain of godliness with contentment (6 – 8)

The false teachers were being driven by a desire for financial gain. Paul shows here that the gains from godliness are out of this world. But until then we should be content with what we have.

Now what?

We live in a very materialistic culture and we need to take Paul’s warning here seriously.

If we are going to keep fighting the good fight of faith, then one of the key things we are going to have to fight against is materialism.

I found this “Commitment to simple lifestyle” very challenging while preparing this sermon – https://www.lausanne.org/content/lop/lop-20#Our Resolve
